Last year, 2013, I spent a month staying and living with my relatives in their village outside Uzhgorod. I’ve written this blog describing my trip and experiences in Zakarpattia. I’ve also included hundreds of photos I hope you will enjoy, as well as some video and audio recordings of Rusyn folk songs and Prostopinije “plainchant” hymns from Greek Catholic services. I will be returning to Ukraine in September, this time for a 3 month stay, and I will continue writing and posting photo’s.

Skiing near Uzhgorod
For winter sports, there is a ski resort in the Carpathian Mountains, not far from Uzhgorod. The Krasiya Ski Resort is only 27 miles from Uzhgorod, near Kostrino on the Polish border. The resort is one of the more developed in Zakarpattia, with one chair lift 1.55 miles long, and 6 tow lines. The mountain has a verticle drop of 1314 feet (compare to vertical drop of 750 feet at Holiday Valley). Krasiya has the longest run in the Ukraine at 2.17 miles. An all day lift ticket is about $25, and a single ride on the lift can be bought for about $3-4. Rental equipment is available for about $12 a day. Accomodations are available; rooms at the resort start at $25. There are also cottages for rent in nearby Vyshka village for around $50-$75 a night.
